Adult Industry pushing High-Definition
It has been the case since the dawn of the Adult Industry that they have driven forward technology and pulled along the mainstream Film Industries with them. They exploited video first, then the Internet, then DVD, and now they're doing the same thing with High-Definition. While the marketplace squabbles and argues trying to outdo each other on paper specifications and prototypes that no one can buy, the Adult Industry are distributing.
From Pan and Scan:
As Smarthouse reports, top adult studios like Digital Playground and Vivid are already releasing high-def content on DVD by utilizing the Windows Media high-def format WMV-HD, which allows high-def programming to be encoded on a standard DVD disc, and then decoded for playback on PCs. Though the major Hollywood studios released a handful of poorly-promoted titles in the fledgling format, high-gloss skin flick epics like 'Pirates' and 'Island Fever 3' have ridden the WMV-HD wave to become huge sellers.
Interestingly it goes on to say that major Studios such as Digital Playground are filming all their content on HD cameras, getting ready for the release of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. So while the mainstream Studios are sitting back waiting, these guys are thinking two steps ahead and looking to the future, something every Studio should be doing now.
Perhaps the mainstream industry is happy to sit back and let these pioneers prove the format and what's required, just following along behind them. After all they're not going to steal their market are they? Oh, and apologies, there's just no way I'm searching for a safe photo for this story from work!
