Arnie's Crusade returning?

Conan.jpgI think the weight for the argument of the return of Arnie is building, for now a project that has long been in limbo and has always had his name against is returning, that of Crusade written by acclaimed William Goldman (Princess Bride, Marathon Man, Bridge Too Far, All the Presidents Men, etc).

According to Moviehole Arnie owns the rights to the film, so it's not a big stretch to think that if he doesn't get elected, returns as Terminator, well...wouldn't you get it kicked off, especially with Goldman writing?

A couple of years back, [Paul] Verhoeven mentioned in an interview that he'd gone cold on the idea because of the controversial repercussions its theme may have – nothing has changed. "The studios are already being asked by the government to be as patriotic as possible, and participate in the 'fight against terrorism'. The story of the Crusades is the murderous attack of the Christians on the Arabs and the Jews. The Pope instigates this complete slaughterhouse, which ultimately had only one goal: to destroy as many Arabs as possible. I doubt that the funding will come from the United States, especially not from anyone connected with the Catholic Church".

Yes, Verhoeven makes some very interesting points there, and in todays society I doubt that Hollywood would let that film get made. Still, like they're doing with the hugely religious His Dark Materials, couldn't they just rip out all the contentious religion and substitute it with something else?

How about it's the free Governments of the world rising up against the Terrorists? Oh...that was Afghanistan...it would sound more like Rambo then.

What do you think, could this ever be made, much less in the next few years?

I still dont care what anyone says...ARNOLD is still the MAN. movie magic can make anyone seem hard, and he knows exactly how to pull it off, even with his shirt on.

I'm like you, though... and I'd hate to see any film maker whimp out and change their story just to seem more patriotic.

Is this movie going to be LIKE the princess bride IE irreverent humor and insanity, or what?
