Da Vinci inspirers appear in film

DaVinciCode_Poster.jpgCurrently the courts in the UK are still hearing the case of the authors The Holy Blood and the Holy GrailThe Holy Blood and the Holy Grail on Amazon UK versus Dan Brown and his book The Da Vinci CodeThe Da Vinci Code on Amazon UK, yet in the meatime some other authors have reaped the massive rewards of being used as inspiration for Brown's book.

From Digital Spy comes the story of how two authors accepted parts as extras in the film in what reads like a hurridly arranged deal.

The novelist has allowed Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince, writers of 1997 book The Templar Revelation, to shoot a scene with Tom Hanks in the Da Vinci movie adaptation...

...Lynn told the Sunday Mirror, "Dan admitted in court he got his 'big idea' after reading our book. It wasn't until the trial that we realised quite how much he'd used our work. He sorted it for us to be in the film, which was an honour. We sat behind Tom on a London bus."

Having read the Grail book and the Da Vinci Code (a poorly written book in my mind) I can see where the connections are. This quote does make it sound like these other authors have been given a nice little bonus as soon as the news was outed in the trial. I wonder how long this case with the other authors is going to continue, and if it could hold up the film itself?

I am really getting bored with all this brouhaha about Da Vinci Code. It wasnt even a mind-blowing book! Like Richard said, it was poorly written (mind you Rich you can write so much better than Dan Brown!) although some of the pages were quite engaging. Brown meant his work to be adapted into film, that was my first impression whilst reading it, he cant give it a very ending either, but I will watch the film, it's Tom Hanks for goodness sake! And cracking the codes have always appealed to me, but the plot, I dont buy it at all.

Just out of interest, is this the only piece of work that actually used the premise presented in "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail"? Speaking of which Richard, have you read Kate Mosse's "Labyrinth", it's very good, and much better written. Wont be surprised if eventually that book will be adapted into film too.

For me the facts/myth/history bits of the book were the interesting bits. The rest of the plot was good>average. Still, it was an enjoyable yarn that I don't regret reading. I'm indifferent about the movie though - I just can't get excited about it. Probably Tom Hanks's fault.

Dave, why what's Tom Hanks fault, just didnt picture him as Langdon did you? It will be very interesting as to how Mr Hanks can make him a more interesting character in the film, I actually found Langdon quite boring. If they will also make "Angels and Demons", which IMHO is a much better book and with a better plot, then oh wow.

when I originally heard about this movie and read the book i was offended by its' content and poised to hate the movie with a passion ( pun intended )

things have changed. I re read the book. It rocked. It made some great points without trodging the religion to anyone except those who forget the pure MESSAGE of the son of god.

this movie has also amazed me the more I've read about it because of its' seeming treatment of the source material and the solemnity it seems to ooze.
I am eagerly anticipating this now. more than perhapse X3. but not superman.

never that much...

I feel the same mogulus. I thought it was blasphemous!

I came across the book towards early 2004 and was very offended by the premise that I stopped reading it for a few days, then I thought if my faith is strong no secular work should erode it that easily. So I finished it and like I said, enjoyed it. I've loaned my book to so many people I couldnt keep track who has it now I just want to read it again before it comes out in May. If you havent read it yeat, try A&D, unless of course you already have?

As for the excitement factor, yes I am more excited to see this than X3.
