HD vs DVD - A comparison

HDReady.jpgThere's big changes coming on the home front in the form of HD TV as well as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats not only invading the DVD side but also on your home computer and games consoles, but what does it all mean? I caught a visual frame to frame comparison of Lord of the Rings, and it's quite stunning.

Through FilmRot, Cornbread has twelve shots captured from first DVD and then from an HD stream, using the same Photoshop downsizing they've linked them via rollover. Check the images for the DVD snapshot then roll over them for the HD. Wow.

Now there's a lot that could be down to the capture, downsizing and saving, but there's still a huge visual depth of difference. Personally I don't feel my Home Cinema setup is as bad as those DVD captures suggest, but there's no denying the quality difference here. If you weren't convinced before are you interested now?

Stay tuned, I have a big catchup post planned with all the new DVD format news that has been happening in the past few months. Some interesting and exciting stuff...

The difference is obviously there and it's impressive. Is it enough to make the general public switch from DVD? I'm not sure how mass adoption (and hence success) will come about.

Most impressive yes.

So what does this mean exactly, that I need to change from buying DVDs to HD in the future, or the possibility of DVDs being phased out like in the next 3-5 years or so?

I'd be converted if I saw it in a Star Wars film! *winks*
