Indian Superhero to rival American?
India, it seems, is growing nervous of the growing influence of Western cinema on its younger population, so much so that an Indian investor has decided to ship across U.S. Director Vincent Edwards to make a film of an Indian superhero.
From Hindustan Times through AWN:
U.S. director Vincent Edwards has said he is working on an animated film based on a widely known Indian cartoon hero...The top-secret project will feature several of India's best known Bollywood actors and actresses. "It's an Indian heritage project that will be acceptable to a global audience without alienating the local viewers," he said......"I was asked to work on this project by someone worried that the Indian culture will be buried, lost in a mad rush to Americanize with the huge interest in superheroes like Superman and Spiderman," Edwards said.
That's really interesting that India is so concerned about the Western influence that they are pushing to have their own Superheros on screen. So much so that they are shipping over Western Directors in order to make them compete with current Hollywood films and make them attractive to their younger population.
I like this idea, and if the project works then it's bringing some diversity to film, mixing cultures and styles, and also raising stories to a global audience that are part of a cultures heritage that we don't usually get to see. However, since the Director has only the Spiderman TV series to his IMDB listing, one might not think it would get the full audience it deserves. Time will tell.
