IRA film from the US

JoeEstevez.jpgA predominantly US based crew making a film about one mans struggle in the IRA written and directed by Mexican born Damian Chapa, and starring a host of not-so-well-known US actors.

Now I'm not going to bash this movie right off the bat, but it's hard not to wonder how this will turn out since there appears to be little connection to Ireland other than the traditional romanticised viewpoint of the Americans.

However, a quick search off the back of the story from Movies Online, reveals some more interesting news from the Times Online.

A film about a hardline terrorist opposed to the peace process has been shooting in Co Wicklow and moves to Belfast this week. IRA: King of Nothing tells the story of Bobby O'Brien, an IRA member who doesn't agree with the direction the organisation has taken.

Damian Chapa, the director of the film, had been developing the project for two years. The $1m (£550,000) film, starring Rachel Hunter and Joe Estevez, a younger brother of Martin Sheen, was in preproduction when the IRA announced it was disarming, so the script was hastily rewritten to incorporate new developments.

Now that does sound much more interesting, but I still can't shake that concern that it might be a US viewpoint on the troubles:

Chapa has visited Belfast several times and is married to Ciara O'Brien, an actress from Belfast who moved to Hollywood...

...[Estevez?] Sheen, whose mother, Mary Ann Phelan, was an Irish immigrant with IRA connections, has been a prominent Hollywood supporter of the republican cause

However it's not all bad, it also stars two Irish actors in background roles, one of whom is a Producer, and it does sound as though care has been taken in development of the story, particularly during the rewrites as the lengthy peace process began.

Still, there's some feeling that it could be a film that over romanticises the IRA as many in the US have been guilty of in the past, and could this new war on terrorism have any affect on the films viewpoint? What do you think?

Any politically orientated film "should" have loads of loads of material to choose from so writing a decent script will be easily researched.

I hope they make it dark and gritty and show the real consequences of violence.

Could be interesting, but the US slant on the troubles always tends to be romanticised and they forget that right or wrong the majority of those in the North of Ireland want to remain British.

… Funny though how films about terrorism tend to be controversy free when the terrorist has a white face.

I mean look at all the fuss they were making about Kurtlar Vadisi Irak a film no one outside of Turkey would have paid any attention to; B list US actors or not, if they had not made a fuss. … I know it’s not about terrosim, but they tried to say it fueled the fire.

I'll reserve judgement until the movie comes out. In the meantime have a watch of Paul Greengrass's Omagh:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408056/

It might have 'shaky cam' but it rams home the true human cost of the 'troubles'.

Alternatively for something a bit lighter check out Tommy Lee Jone's accent in Blown Away. It had me in tears of laughter for weeks. The fool! WHAT WAS THE MAN THINKING..

Damn Dave, you're right...I was creasing over that too, especially when you wrote it.

Omagh is an excellent piece of work and certainly gave Greengrass the kudos to boost his career, and at the same time made a very clear and humanistic message.

BITH - Good points...Might be worth checking out the write up for "Road to Guantanamo" which should appear later today.
