Warner issue HD DVD specs

BluRayvsHDDVD.jpgWarner Brothers have issued some specifications on their first HD-DVD releases, and quite frankly I'm very underwhelmed.

Over at Pan and Scan they have the pictures of the front and back of the boxes...and there's nothing to get excited about apart from the video spec 1080p High Definition 16x9 2.4:1 with the special features in 480i Standard Definition. However the extras are, well, standard extras.

The interesting point is this ongoing concern about the downgrading feature of the copy protection. That is, if your equipment isn't connected with the correct cables and to the correct sockets the signal will be downgraded. Not such a big thing if you make sure you have the correct system in place.

Good news there is that Sony were the first to announce they will not downgrade content, pretty soon other studios were following and currently we're sitting with Warner and Lions Gate not taking a stand, well not true, Warner have actually said they will. From HD Beat:

"Execs at Warner Brothers declined to comment, but sources with knowledge of the studio's plans say "at least some" of the 20 HD-DVD releases planned through April will use the software."

That's seriously bad news. Buying a disc that's contents will downgrade if you aren't setup correctly or are forced onto analogue inputs. Would this put you off buying these discs?

I've lost the will to care anymore. I hope this is the new laserdisc...

I couldnt keep up with all these technology. Eventually, I might stop collecting DVDs and perhaps take on a new hobby, like rock-climbing perhaps.

They don't want films in Hollywood. What they want is a soundtrack they can sell.
