Captain America, Hulk 2 and Iron Man stall?

AviArad.jpgAvi Arad has been talking about the Marvel film production deal and what's due on the slate, and the word is that what he wanted isn't what's happening.

From Business 2.0 through SuperheroHype comes the news that the priorities are changing somewhat. Arad had wanted Captain America as the first out from the company, but that doesn't appear to be.

...insiders say Arad had hoped to make Captain America Marvel's debut film. But that's not happening; Arad says he couldn't line up the director he wanted until 2009. Moreover, two films Arad now says could be among those first out of the gate, the Hulk sequel and Iron Man, aren't covered by the Merrill loan, which means Marvel will need another way to finance them.

That deal, let me remind you, is a sweet $525 million, and that's a lot of cash. The article is quick to point out that they are under intense scrutiny and that not many people believe they can pull a decent profit from the ten film plan, after all the big names have already gone to the screen. Now they're thinking of a sequel to the poor Hulk, a Captain America in today's political climate, and Iron Man, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Iron Fist, Deathlok and Ant-Man who don't command the broad appeal as the other onscreen supes. All the while Surfer is left to languish and X-Men are on their last stand.

It is a concern. However, what isn't is Hulk's new opponent.

Arad has chosen one of his favorite baddies: Abomination, a former Yugoslav spy who has mutated into a 980-pound freak of terrifying strength and unpleasant demeanor.

Wooo...an even less well known baddie. When can we expect Captain Doorknob and Johnnie Unknown? At least we'll have Wolverine and Magneto to keep us going.

I dont' know, man... next to THE LEADER and WENDIGO, the ABOMINATION is perhapse the most exciting of the hulks' villains.

I think the villain doesnt really matter in this series. As long as the villain can go toe to toe with the hulk, i'm sure we won't care if its' ma kettle on crack. We just want to see mr. green smash.

The Abomination is only an obscure baddie if you belong to that group of people who are quite happy to watch cartoons or films about a comic character but would not be seen dead reading one of the actual comics.

The ironic thing here is that the comics are nearly often a lot more mature and complex than the filmed versions.

comics have actually been that way since the 60's.... the x men was at first a veiled and sugar coated commentary on social rights and race relations. The hulk may not be that heavyweight in villains, but as the Abomination goes, you couldnt make a better choice for a screen villain.

the abomination can go toe to toe with the hulk. I want to see a villain take him to the limit and back again.

anything but phantom Nolte again.

Morbius, you're missing another group. Those who don't and never have read the Hulk comics.

Me, X-Men, Spidey and Surfer man. Hulk wise I only ever saw the TV series.

Bummer about pushing back Shellhead, if done right that could rock and would be a good crossover to a straight action film. I still think they should do James Bond in armor. :-)

Now that you mentioned it Morbius, what comic books can you lend me next? I will read them easily more than watching the DVDs youve lent me!

Acting is not the noblest profession in the world. There are things lower than acting - not many, mind you. The politicians give you something to look down on from time to time.
