Grand Prix SE DVD coming
I know that not many people will be interested in the Formula 1 film Grand Prix starring James Garner, but I really wanted to highlight this new DVD release due out in July because I like F1, so there.
Formula 1 hasn't spawned much in the way of movies, surprising considering the history, the danger and excitement, and the glamour (okay, we're talking about past days rather than current F1, but still!), but it did make one film which captured the excitement of F1, and that was Grand Prix. It starred Garner and Eva Marie Saint alongside such great drivers as Graham Hill, Jack Brabham and Jim Clark, and directed by the superb talent of John Frankenheimer. It's a superb movie to watch for film and F1 fans alike.
Now, from DVD Times, comes the news of a Special Edition. The real draw of this one is the new digital transfer from restored 65mm elements and a remastered DD5.1 track, that alone would be worth it, but they throw in six documentaries, four of which have never been released before.
Pushing the Limit: The Making of Grand Prix - 40th Anniversary Making-of documentary
Flat Out: Formula One in the Sixties- A history of Formula One racing in the sixties
The Style and Sound of Speed – A look at the style of Saul Bass and the film’s sound design
Brands Hatch: Behind the Checkered Flag - Behind the scenes tour of the famous raceway used in the movie
Grand Prix: Challenge of the Champions – 1960’s Featurette behind-the-scenes at the Grand Prix

What is missing though is an audio commentary. I know Frankenheimer has passed on, but couldn't we have had Garner gracing the commentary? Still, I think it's a cracking release.
