One Missed Call remake
Here we go with another Japanese horror remake, this one is One Missed Call from the original Chakushin ari. IMDB carry the blurb:
People mysteriously start receiving voicemail messages from their future selves, in the form of the sound of them reacting to their own violent deaths, along with the exact date and time of their future death, listed on the message log. The plot thickens as the surviving characters persue the answers to this mystery which could save their lives.
Is what they have for the original and the remake write up doesn't change that much. It's an intriguing idea, one that already has you caught up before you even see the film. I haven't seen this one, although I have seen the similar Phone which was quite spooky and had some superb closing moments. Yet this write up looks a lot stronger than Phone.
I have mixed feelings about these remakes, they haven't been as good as the originals apart from The Grudge. All the others haven't been as good, although The Ring was close. What the better ones have in common are the original creatives, or even the original belief and drive in the movie, and this is what this one will need. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the original team are on board. From Variety through Coming Soon:
French filmmaker Eric Valette is set to direct...The screenplay was adapted...by Andrew Klavan, who wrote the screenplay for Michael Caine starrer A Shock to the System, as well as several novels.
So, the last hope is that they pull off the transfer to the Western market which we haven't seen happen as yet. Close, but not yet.
