Clerks 2 has audio commentary in cinema

Clerks2.jpgHere's a bizarre but highly imaginative marketing idea for the cinema, audio commentaries. Apparently Kevin Smith has recorded an audio commentary specifically for Clerks 2 and to be shown in cinemas, well not exactly shown, let me explain.

According to Jo Blo:

Kevin Smith has already recorded an audio commentary for CLERKS II that will be available for download onto your iPod and allow you to listen to a Director's Commentary in the theater.

May I just point out that there are many other MP3 systems in the marketplace, and all just as locked down and tied in as the iPod.

This is a superb idea, and like Mike over there I can't for the life of me figure out why no one thought of this before. You go watch the movie, come home, find you can download an audio commentary and pay to go back in and watch it all over again. I hope that they do offer this for free (there's no word yet) as it would encourage money to go back to the cinemas. How about the cinemas offering rental of MP3 players for the show preloaded? Or your ticket number allows you to download it for free and get back in with a reduced ticket price?

What a cracking idea. Do you think this will catch on?

Superb idea. This type of content is by far the most sought after in terms of supplementary material.

Listening to a director waxing lyrical about filmaking anecdotes is just so cool and, in Smith's case, pricelessly funny. And you could leave the theater, go to the bathroom, and not miss a second!

This could open the doors for so many other similar minded features in cinema. I'm excited.

Kevin Smith aka. F*ckin' genius!

What a great idea. I really and truly hope that this happens. It'd be so cool to get the director's commentary with the cinematic release of the picture as opposed to waiting and waiting for months for the DVD. Couldn't the cinema issue headsets with IR-receivers to those who want them, then transmit the commentary to the headsets?! UGC / Cineworld have a similar system in place for guests who are hard of hearing. This is from their site:

Personal infra-red receivers are available from the pay desk which, when placed around the neck, will help with clearer sound.

It could happen. Only beef with bringing iPods / MP3 players etc in is that SOMEBODY is guaranteed to modify one and suit it up with a camera and mic and hey presto we're back to square one with studios bitching about piracy!

Spidey, that's a great point actually, and suggests that the cinemas should introduce their own equipment.
