DeNiro's Good Shepherd reviewed
Amazingly there are two reviews of Robert De Niro's The Good Shepherd that have "leaked" out onto the Internet. Just to make things even better one is glowing and the other scathing! Shepherd is the big name story of the CIA history through the eyes of it's leading agent.
From Jo Blo who carry the AICN come some comments from the reviews:
They've posted two reviews and interestingly enough, they're diametrically opposed. What the first reviewer calls "an intense, fascinating, pulsating and passionate depiction of a chapter of American History that even if we think we know somewhat - we really have no idea about," the second derides as "The film needs a lot of work, to put it generously. The plot of the movie includes lots of characters, with lots of recognizable talent, but not much coherence."While the first reviewer says Damon "turns in a performance that is not only stoic and mature, but observant, wise and conflicted, the second reviewer disagrees and says he "meanders through the movie, never really showing much emotion."
Watch when you go to read the reviews, apparently in both there are spoilers galore. I'm not going near them because I really want to see this film untouched. However I think that might not be possible considering past history...
I remember the story told by Paul Schrader who said that the same single investor who had his film Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist remade, was the backing for De Niro's movie. He expressed his concerns to De Niro who said that he would be able to control him, and that's what Schrader thought up until the moment the film was completed when this man pulled the plug, hired a Director and remade the film.
Schrader was convinced the same fate would befall De Niro's film, as it had others before...the concern is that this might be true and when it comes to the final moments the man behind the film stands up and imprints his hoof on the movie.
