Favreau talks Iron Man

IronMan.jpgJohn Favreau has opened himself up to the fans of all things Iron Man and sounds as though he's trying to produce the best comic book adaptation movie to date. Just the other day he was interviewed about it all and gave some juicy quotes for us all to mull over.

"It's the first movie Marvel is self-financing," he said of a new deal that frees the makers of the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" movies from studio control.

...he said at MTV. Now that in itself is interesting, and if you haven't thought about it when it was announced, you really should now. Free from studio control...think about that once more. It screams potential.

"We're gonna have it take place in the present day, but there will be an origin story that has the old, gray Iron Man suit; eventually it will progress into more of the modern look, that's the fun of doing the first one."...

..."The alcoholism doesn't come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man...I think we're going to lay the groundwork for it, but the first one's going to explore him taking on this alter ego of Iron Man, and developing the suit, and what happens politically within the Stark Corporation."...

..."What's nice is that those movies don't require an expensive star; Iron Man's the star, the superhero is the star"

Interestingly the article says "my franchise" referring to Favreau, but I think it's a bit early to be that hopeful. However can we say that all the former concerns of the fans are being addressed and addressed well? I think so...and no Cruise.

"What's nice is that those movies don't require an expensive star; Iron Man's the star, the superhero is the star"

We'll that's really encouraging news. Perhaps we won't get a clear visor exposing Tom's cheesy grin after all. (As discussed in a recent thread here.)

I would have been VERY interested to see this film if Cruise was cast, now there is zero interest for me.

As with all superhero type movies I prefer the relatively unknown actor than a name. A known actor is often way too distracting.

I want to see a movie about Iron Man, not a movie star trying to be Iron Man. This article makes me hopeful.

Well said, Meli. :-)

Simone, I am disappointed in you, that's such a shallow viewpoint. :-(

Doesnt matter Morbius, I have always disappointed you, so what's new? *winks*

I have never heard of Iron Man until recently and when Tom Cruise was known to be associated with it. I do like Tom Cruise, and I will see a film with him in it. Now that he might not be cast, I dont really care about this anymore. I have never been much into superheroes, so this is not the first. You know I didnt care for Spiderman, why would I care for Iron Man now?

Ah, but Simone would you have cared for Spider-Man if Cruise had played him?

Doubtless you will be interested in Tom's next film project...

"An afternoon watching wet paint dry".

It's gotta be good, Cruise is in it after all.

(Morbius quietly ducks down and waits for the smelly stuff to hit the fan...)

Perhaps I would. *winks*

Morbius, check out another post I recently made, about the Bob Dylan movie, that will make you smile, and make you feel guilty of what youve just done here today.

Guilty? Who Moi?

Fancy a drink?

White wine spritzer please.

So what's up with Iron Man, what power does he possess?

I can not believe I just segued into that and kept my poise. ;-)

In the original comic book version Iron Man AKA Anothony Stark was an industrialist Howard Hughes type figure. He had a heart problem and was kept alive only by a steel chestplate which he wore permanently. To augment the Chestplate he built himself an armoured suit which he used to fight evil.

In later comics the suit got sleeker and the heart problem was cured and forgotten about. He later had a problem with alcoholism. He is a founding member of the superhero team known as "The Avengers".

As for powers with the suit on he is super strong, he can fly and fire "Repulser Rays" from the palms of his gloved hands.

very very interresting...
...would that, in effect, make this an Indie film? Campea referred to Star Wars 3 as an indie film with good point...

Indie or no, this screams potential. and i'm glad it's with Iron man for 2 reasons

1: Iron Man is a DEEP character...Tony Starks' problems are with HIMSELF and completely different from spideys, batman's supermans' and all...i mean, he's a BUSINESS MAN...this may take it in a direction appealing to people my age...20-40 somethings...

2: I really dont' know much about Iron Man...comic or otherwise, and most people wouldnt' either...this means the movie could have a life of its' own that trumps the life that the other superhero movies of this day and age have for themselves....there wouldnt' be a billion screaming doomsayer fans going "they're screwing ironman up" becaue most people would be getting their first injection of the iron one....

sign me up.

Morbius: I remember him now. You dont happen to have some of The Avengers comics dya? ;-)

this sounds fantastic. lots of potential for character development.

fingers crossed they don't choose ben affleck.

2 months ago I couldn't have told you anything about Iron Man. However someone at work loaned me the Ultimates, the new reincarnation of the Avengers. In that they all have a discussion about who would play them in films and Johnny Depp was put forward as Iron Man. I could see that working way better that the cheese meister himself Mr Cruise.

Not read "The Ultimates", but be careful about confusing that Iron Man with the classic version who I assume the film will be based on.

Depp might just be a bit too baby faced and quirky to play Stark who was always a bit like Howard Hughes in my book.

And no I am not suggesting Leonardo DiCaprio either, he is even more baby faced than Depp. While he gave a good perfomance in "The Aviator" Hughes in his youth was (and I speak as a straight Male) a much better looking man than Leonardo.

I should add that Tony Stark may be a Hughes type character in some respects but he does not have his eccentricities. That's another reason why it's probably best not to cast someone who is more into quirky roles like Depp usually is.

"Hughes in his youth was (and I speak as a straight Male) a much better looking man than Leonardo."

Morbius! Did you just say that out loud??? I thought most men usually refuse to give comments about how another man looked like. *winks*

Simone you do not have to be a woman (or gay) in order to recognise if a man is handsome (in the classical sense) or not. (Admitting it is another matter for some men perhaps. Maybe they have something to hide?)

Yes, I am sure that most men can understand what women see in George Clooney for example. When it comes to boyish men with Pixie features like DiCaprio though that's another matter?

When I was watching the documentaty features on the Aviator DVD which I borrowed off my sister I was struck by the fact that the real Hughes looked much more like a classic movie star than Leonardo does!

Here's the proof...

Anyway back to Iron Man.

Most of the straight men I know just wouldnt say what you just said. But then again...

Yeah back to the show folks!
