Jimi Hendrix movie halted by Courts

FilmAboutJimiHendrix_Poster.jpgThe much discussed Jimi Hendrix movie, the one that rumour had it Quentin Tarantino was associated with, looks like it's dead, and Tarantino wasn't signed up.

From The Guardian:

The high court has put the kibosh on a proposed Jimi Hendrix biopic after it ruled that its US film-makers had no rights to the legendary guitarist's music or likeness.

Director John Hillman was told he would have to seek permission from the Experience Hendrix company, run by the late performer's daughter Janie.

This is a total change from last month when press releases claimed that the rights were secured and then Tarantino was going to direct, however I'm not so sure that was a press release from them rather than a rumour, but that's what the Guardian says.

Doesn't look like there's room for negotiation either:

Janie Hendrix said: "We will certainly rely on this judgment in protecting our rights against any other parties who make unauthorised use of Hendrix songs and recordings under the guise of the Hillman claim."

That'll be dead then.

Aw crap! How can they screw up something like this!

This sucks. That would have ruled. I wonder if they'll actively pursue the rights now or are we going to court.

So who's this John Hillman character? The only such person in the IMDB by that name was an "assistant accountant" on a few films in the 90s.

I'm not so sure the news is as entirely bad as the article seems to suggest. I read that last bit as Janie Hendrix warning other people against trying to do stuff without their permission; I don't see anything in there that says they absolutely won't give it. Possibly if the people wanting to make the film had tried to negotiate, permission might've been granted. Mind you, I think they've blown any chance they might've had now...

I think we'll never really know the real story.

As for John Hillman, no idea, I couldn't find the name either, but remember no listing in IMDB doesn't mean no good.
