Mr and Mrs Smith TV series a sequel

MrandMrsSmith_Poster.jpgWe've all been waiting for news on the Mr and Mrs Smith television series spin off from the same named movie. Sometime ago we found out that both Doug Liman and Simon Kinberg were to work on the series to begin with and try and kick it off. Now Kinberg is starting to talk about it at CHUD through Moviehole.

"It’s going to be more of a Moonlighting or a Hart to Hart or a Remington Steele with some Alias. It’s a show about a marriage – two people trying to balance their home life with their work lives, and their work lives happen to be international assassins. They go out from week to week on missions, and then try to balance with whatever the issue at home is. Frankly it works better as a TV show. We struggled with the movie narratively, as it loses its theme in the third act a little bit. The idea is better suited for a weekly series in some ways. The way we pitched it is Married With Children meets Alias."

Well I don't know if the film will translate to a TV series, I mean take the film and substitute those two high profile leads for two next to unknown actors and does the film still have the same selling value? I don't think so, so to extend that to a TV series I think we'll find the comedy and the setup will run dry pretty quickly.

Alias meets Married with Children...Moonlighting, Hart to Hart, Remington Steele? Personally I think the movie was all we needed to see thanks. Can this work?

As you know I have a lot of love for the film but I wouldn't watch it as a TV series. Bad idea.

Strangely enough I liked this movie. It had great entertainment value and did exactly what it said on the tin. Brad/Ange had fun in what they were doing (and who they were doing) and the movie didn't try to be anything it wasn't. I enjoyed it quite alot.

In terms of getting a series off the ground, you can see why this type of thing was chosen. It's a simple, funny and ironic premise which can work on a number of levels, from espionage to "What are we having for dinner?".

Whether it'll work or not depends on the execution and whether it'll acknowledge the film or start from scratch. Personally, I think it sounds better than a hell of alot of the other fodder on the idiot box and, if done with wit and humour, I'd probably watch it. In saying that, I don't watch much TV at all so I probably wouldn't watch much of it.

don't watch tv unless it involved the news or extreme sports, or news about extreme sports.

this movie only worked cause jolie and pitt have on scream charisma together.

a tv series without them, or one that does let a relationship develop will not work.

hell, what do i know i dont even like lost or that 24 rubbish.

I havent seen the film so I cant really make a comment. Although saying that, the success of the tv shows mentioned had something to do with the screen presence of the actors;
Moonlighting- Bruce Willis & Cybill Shepherd
Remington Steele- Pierce Brosnan & Stephanie Zimbalist
Hart to Hart- Robert Wagner & Stefanie Powers

If the main reason why Mr & Mrs Smith worked was because of the Pitt-Jolie team up then I doubt if it will work as brilliant as a tv series without them two. But saying that they can still get two actors who have got great charisma together and who knows? It's just tv, so if it doesnt work, they dont have to come back for another season. Easy peasy.
