Raimi producing 20,000 Leagues update

20000LeaguesUndertheSea_Poster.jpgA remake, or update, of the classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is apparently underway and Sam Raimi's production company Buckaroo are behind the push.

According to Variety through Coming Soon:

The deal doesn't include a directing component for the "Spider-Man" franchise helmer. New Line is developing the project as a film that would look more closely into the background of Captain Nemo as well as that of his prisoners aboard the Nautilus.

Disney's original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, released in 1954, starred James Mason, Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre in the story of a 19th century expedition to find a mysterious sea creature that's been attacking ships.

I really did like the original, it's a big kids movie with lots of fun and adventure, and it makes great watching for a sunday afternoon on telly. Is it time for a remake? Well actually I do think that this one might be a film that could do well out of a remake, but there are so many dependencies on how they do it and who's in charge. What do you feel about it if you're a fan of the original?

well, nowadays a few remakes are really surprising me. If they got a real director onboard, a decent script, and they gave it a treatment like Jackson gave Kong or such, I could see it being one of the COOLEST movies ever.

Like I said on the movie blog: Any film that has a Kraken ( squid ) attacking a ship ( submarine or otherwise ) is weight for me.

incidentally...what would the updated "nautelus" (sp) look like? I remember the disney version so well...what would something new appear as?

The Disney version (Their first full length live action movie) already is one of the COOLEST movies ever. It was great fun and nobody tops James Mason as Captain Nemo.

That said even that was a remake, there were silent versions before it.

Thinking about it doing a modern day version is not actually a bad idea. Nemo is basically a terrorist after all and a terrorist with his own nuclear sub is a pretty frightening idea.
