Southland Tales to be recut after Cannes
Southland Tales the much anticipated film by Donnie Darko creator Richard Kelly hasn't been doing well in Cannes, and yet the scores on IMDB are looking quite healthy, as are some of the comments. Yet it looks as though Kelly is considering a heavy recut of the film for the US release.
At Cannes it's been heavily criticised as overly long, broad, sloppy, etc, etc. However looking at IMDB some of the comments and scores say otherwise. One hundred and nine votes to date say a full ten, while the largest doubting crowd are sixteen people at a mere one.
From Entertainment Weekly through Jo Blo Kelly speaks out about it all...
"The only thing that’s disappointing or frustrating for me is just that I don’t know that the film will be seen in the United States. Maybe it will, but potentially it could be shown with almost an hour of it missing. I don’t quite know what that film is."
Indeed, cuts may secure a US release, but think on this Mr Kelly, this drives up the desire from real film fans (not the accountant laden Studios) for a remastered, Directors Cut release. So don't look at this too badly.
I guess the good news is that this story doesn't mention that there would have to be cuts for any other audiences. Perhaps in all the other markets that you readers belong to we'll get to see the full version. Which would you rather see now that the Cannes critics have spoken? A market friendly cut, or the original release?
