Spielberg is not on Angels and Demons
The story is flying around just now that Steven Spielberg is looking like he might be directing the so called Da Vinci Code 2, Angels and Demons. However the story looks doubtful, and you might wonder why on earth he would want to.
Over at Moviehole Clint delves into this and puts a very good case for why he wouldn't. Let me summarise.
As of late January of this year—just over a full month ago, mind you—"Da Vinci Code" producer Brian Grazer told trade paper Variety that he hoped "Code" would create a franchise and that Sony has first dibs on "Angels and Demons" as part of their contract for "Da Vinci Code."
Is perhaps the strongest argument against, but he goes on to say that with Spielberg contractually obliged to produce movies for Paramount-Dreamworks, Paramount now owning Dreamworks. The story doing the rounds says that Universal-Dreamworks has bought the rights...well there's the problem. There's still more though, why would Dreamworks and Spielberg be working jointly with Universal when they just jumped ship to Paramount?
Okay, I paraphrase, but all in all it doesn't sound feasible. Personally, throwing all that aside, I can't see Spielberg giving up on his huge upcoming list of movies to turn to the second in a series, especially as there's nothing really special to do with such a well read book as we've seen. Would he want to simply bring the tale to the big screen and suffer the same issues Da Vinci did, with half the world already knowing the story?
