Star Trek in Aberdeen

JamesDoohan.jpgQuite bizarrely the Scottish City of Aberdeen is one of the places laying claim to be the birthplace of the Star Trek character of Scotty played by the late James Doohan.

Some scripts of the show are alleged to state that Scotty was born in Linlithgow in 2222 and that his parents still lived there, this has prompted officials in West Lothian Council to erect a plaque in the Scottish town to commemorate the fact. However looks as though Aberdeen Council is fighting back as they claim an episode mentions him as an "old Aberdeen pub crawler".

With that in mind they are going to go a few steps further and look to link their tourist trade with the character and show. According to the BBC:

This includes assessing the benefits and drawbacks of bars and clubs developing a range of Star Trek-related drinks to boost tourism.

The plan has gone before the city council's economic development sub-committee, which has decided to pursue further investigation.

Having lived in Aberdeen for most of my life I could see Scotty crawling round those bars, he's sure to meet a whole breadth of alien life (I know I did) and on many an evening he'd boldly go where most men have gone before...I mean the excellent bakers that opens just before the pubs close!

Better visit Aberdeen next when I come back to Scotland!

What better than a small town to dream about a vast universe of aliens?

Pubcrawler = born in town? How does that work? Oh, of course, I've been on a pubcrawl in Aberdeen too, maybe I was really born there as well. Richard?

Errm, what about the something-teen years in between? Don't people ever move?

ie the years that never happened because it's FICTION?

No one ever leaves Aberdeen. You have to struggle to break free.

Oh come on Lee, it's Star Trek for gods sake!
