Besson's Gangster tale
Luc Besson may produce a mob movie adapted by Michael Caleo from Soprano's fame from Tonino Benacquista’s mob novel Malavita.
The book follows the Gangster has he moves to France from America and begins to turn to his old habits of running the town in his own mob style. The movie seems set to tackle the story from an entirely different angle. From Variety through Empire Online:
"The book focused more on the fish-out-of-water tale, but the movie will focus more on the manhunt for Giovanni Manzoni (the main character), and how he rose through the ranks to become who he is,"
Shame that Besson isn't taking the Directorial duties as that role is still up in the air, he'll just produce at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how they tackle this, already it sounds like a stronger thriller than the pitch for the original tale which sounds more comedy and human life than anything. There's also the question of if they'll film an English-French language split or if we'll see the French side magically transform to English after a few lines - I hate that!
