Fox joins studio download phase

PCScreen.jpgFox is the latest studio to start offering Internet users the ability to purchase and download movies, legally. Not only that but they're also offering TV shows, and amongst that list will be Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Serenity!

The story from Pan and Scan is disheartening:

Movies will range in price from $9.95 to $19.95. TV shows will go for $1.99 per episode...only viewable on your computer or in Windows-compatible portable devices.

However the fact remains, this news is still a half-hearted attempt. Sure there are more and more studios signing up to the CinemaNow downloading service, but there's no move to allow the downloaded movies to be burnt to DVD and watched on anything but the computer. That's not going to put the fire out from under the pirates. They'll have to wise up and offer a service that's better than the one they can currently get on the Internet, and stopping the downloaded movie from being cut to DVD is not that service.

I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but I personally don't see the attraction of movie downloads, particularly when it comes with so many restrictions. I like to have the physical 'thing' in my hands, be able to access some of the extra features, look at the cover art, and generally admire them all lined up neatly on my shelf!

Same here Jayne. I will d'load music, but not a film. I will still go out of my way and buy it and put it alongside my growing collection.

Plus I buy 99% of my DVDs online, so I'm always excited when I get home and see that the postie's been!
