Star Trek series pitch revealed
Now that the Star Trek movie is in someones safe hands and it looks as though it's set to go ahead, Bryce Zabel (creator of Dark Skies, writer of many other shows) is revealing the treatment he and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski developed together.
I remember when this was first rumoured, the idea of Straczynski, who created Babylon 5 which I became absolutely engrossed in, reimagining Star Trek was an exciting thought. I really didn't like the episodical formula of Star Trek, which continually followed the same pattern on every episode. Babylon 5 changed that for me and gave me a huge five series long episodical story which was truly epic, growing from strength to strength, it was superb. So the suggestion that he could do something similar for Star Trek was truly exciting.
Well now you can read that fourteen page treatment that they created, and see what you think. Perhaps there might still be a chance for a new take on a series, particularly if the film takes off, or do you think that J.J. Abrams has that deal already tied up?
Through Sci Fi Wire you can head over to Bryce Zabel's Blog and read the entry where he talks about their treatment of Star Trek, and gives you the fourteen page document.
We wanted to do what they do in the world of comics, create a separate universe ("Universe A") so we could embrace the good stuff, banish the bad, and try some new things. In our re-boot ("Universe B"), we wanted to use Kirk, Spock and McCoy, but show them off as you'd never seen them before. It was pretty audacious but here it is if you want to take a look...
Read the entire entry, there's some interesting background and discussion about how they got there and what they wanted from this. Then have a read you Star Trek fans and tell us what you think.
