Superman Returns reviews

SupermanReturns_Poster.jpgThe early Superman Returns reviews are coming out and the comments are superbly positive, although as with all early poster grabbing reviews you have to be a little cynical, but some of these comments are very strong.

From the BBC:

Variety magazine's critic said..."It is sincere, with an artistic elegance and a genuine emotional investment in the material,"...

The Hollywood Reporter...Routh, it continued, plays the comic book character "with honesty [and] winning fortitude".

And Newsweek's David Ansen wrote: "From the start of this gorgeously crafted epic, you can feel that Singer has real love and respect for the most foursquare comics superhero of them all...Newcomer Routh may or may not be a real actor, but he effortlessly lays claim to the iconic role."

His comments were echoed by Harry Knowles on the Ain't It Cool News website, who described Superman Returns as "the film I was hoping and dreaming for...Just as Batman Begins relaunched an ailing Batman, it sends Superman into the stratosphere," he wrote.

Oh, I wonder who gets the poster quote there? Interestingly though, depending how you read some of the comments they may not be that strong, "a heartfelt Superman movie that plays to a broad audience" doesn't sound earth shattering to me. Still, there are good comments in there and everything I'm reading about this just makes me want to see it, but I have reservations.

I am concerned that what we will see is just Superman with huge effects. The showings and the ongoing reviews will tell.

I agree Richard, I too have some slight reservations and I'm desperately afraid that we're going to get little more than a love story with some gratuitous action scenes and an underlying plot of Lex Luthor growing new continents. It sounds a little weak, but that's not to say that I'm not looking forward to seeing the effects and how they're pulled off.

The one thing that I feel Singer dropped the ball with in X-Men and X2 were the action sequences (with the exception of Nightcrawler's introduction)..... so we shall wait and see.

I believe blindly in this film. Reviews around are just confirming this is going to be special. At AICN they are enthusiastic.

I will switch off to all the negativity myself, I am ABSOLUTELY looking forward to see this film, and I am glad I won't be seeing it on my own! *winks*

They don't want films in Hollywood. What they want is a soundtrack they can sell.
