The Book Thief optioned

TheBookThief.jpgThe news that another book has been optioned for a movie wouldn't normally excite me, but this one has an interesting twist. The story for The Book Thief is narrated by Death.

From Variety through Coming Soon:

Fox 2000 has optioned best-selling young-adult novel The Book Thief, by Australian writer Markus Zusak...World War II-era novel, narrated by Death, tells the story of Liesel Meminger from the time she is taken at age 9 to live with a foster family in a German working-class neighborhood. Liesel arrives having just stolen her first book, "The Gravediggers Handbook" -- it will be the beginning of a love affair with books.

Sounds like we're not hearing the full plot there, if it's narrated by Death I would expect at some point he's going to be coming to the forefront of the tale, and that's the part that's interesting me. The rest of the story sounds incredibly tame by comparison, and a glance through the lengthy blurb on Amazon.com (not available on .co.uk) tells a much bigger story and a lot more interesting. It certainly doesn't sound like a young adult tale after all.

Hah! And I was just about to order it from Amazon UK. I need new books to read!
