Weir departs Johnny Depp movie

PeterWeir.jpgPeter Weir has left the production of Shantaram starring Johnny Depp after the studio didn't appreciate his visualisation of the story, it seemed to differ from that of the Studio executives.

The news from Variety through Coming Soon:

"Peter moved on from this film because his interpretation of it differed greatly than that of the studio and producers," a Warner Bros. spokesman said.

Warners has just begun talking to directors to replace Weir but remains optimistic that production will start by spring 2007.

The movie itself as though it would have suited Weir's style quiet well, the question is who else could pull off this movie? From IMDB:

Based on the life story of author Gregory David Roberts, a heroin addict incarcerated for a robbery escapes prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. His ties to the crime underworld there lead him to Afghanistan, where he partners with a mob boss locked in a battle with Russian criminals.

Oh crumbs.

Why not do a sequel to "Master and Commander" Mr Weir?
