Dog Soldiers the sequel

NeilMarshall.jpgSome time ago we heard from Neil Marshall that a Dog Soliders sequel was in development and that he would not direct, well the production seems to be kicking into high gear with an announced Director and a script.

Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat is the worrying title for the sequel which is set to kick off immediately after the first film, as in very next scene. Presumably the plot is as the survivor walks away they encounter more of the same. Tough script.

The script is from Eric Miller and the director is Rob Green. Story comes from Horror Movies through Cinematical.

Of note, there's not much from either of these names, except that Green brought the cool horror The Bunker to the screen...perhaps that is a good sign after all. There are similar themes and styles involved.

Is there any way that there should be a sequel made of Dog Soldiers? Is it not just one of those movies that worked well because it was a fresh and well handled lower budget film? Can you recreate that and do the same in a sequel?

Hmmm, toughie.

I liked Dog Soldiers much in the same way I love Evil Dead. As much for it's faults as it's strengths.

It's gonna be veeeery hard to hit the mark again. They had a well casted and well executed picture there, but with a different director and a bigger budget, I don't see this happening. Maybe they should have gone Dawn Of The Dead Style and made a parrallell story as opposed to pick up from the next scene.

Still, I'm curious.

Something I didn't think of at the time I wrote this is why I am such a fan of Marshall's movies to date. The writing and the dialogue. He seems to create dialogue that real people would say, his characters talk to each other just as real people do, and they react to most situations the way you would expect you would.

So a big question for me is can that new writer carry that signature off?

Well the fact that someone would have to "try" would make it feel a little un-natural. If it's forced, and false people will know.

I don't know what to make of this. I actually wasn't hugely enamoured of Dog Soldiers in the first place, although I suspect part of that lay in my frank befuddlement as to why it was getting a theatrical release rather than just going straight to video. Something about it totally screamed "straight to video" for me. This sequel sounds like an unusually dubious proposition even for a sequel (mind you, Halloween II also picked up immediately where the first film ended, so it can be done)...
