Filmmaker makes Nazi comedies
This story was reported as "German filmmaker tackles another Nazi comedy", however Dani Levy was born in Switzerland and lives in Germany, small point but it does change the outlook of the story slightly. He has just completed Mein Führer - Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler, which is billed as a Nazi based comedy, and he's announced that his next project will be on similar ground.
He received acclaim for Alles auf Zucker! (Go for Zucker!), although it took some time to come, which is what some might call a politically incorrect religious comedy. It won six awards at the German Film Awards last year.
The story from Yahoo News says:
"The Ritchie Boys" is based on the true story of German emigrants who worked as spies for the U.S. government during World War II. Levy will also write the screenplay."If the 'Ritchie Boys' didn't actually exist and ... provide this unbelievable perspective on the liberation of (Nazi) Germany, you'd have to invent them," said Levy, a German Jew who grew up in Switzerland. "They are the most hilarious and tragic anti-heroes you can imagine. Material like this comes around once in a lifetime."
Wow, you have to credit this guy for having the guts to go forward with some seriously controversial topics, but from what he's done to date it sounds like he is actually managing to get people to look at the comic side of life, even in the darkest of situations.
I'm interested enough to search Zucker down and see if his next two films are going to be worth a visit. Has anyone out there seen these yet?
