Hackers, the documentary

PCScreen.jpgCan You Hack It? is a film narrated by Kevin Spacey which delves into the world of computer hackers, what they are, their history, and one in particular, Adrian Lamo aka the Homeless Hacker.

Through Digg the blurb at IMDB tells all:

This film explores the origin of the true Hacker versus today's computer criminals by following the adventures of Adrian Lamo, the famed Homeless Hacker who found security holes in companies and pointed them out so they might be fixed, only to eventually be arrested...Experts on cyber-terrorism also examine our society's views of the Hacker and debate as to whether or not we should recruit and utilize the skills of the helpful Hackers to help fight future cyber-wars instead of continuing to punish what we do not understand.

It sounds quite interesting, and a very relevant and timely documentary. I wonder if they will also look at the darker, more illegal side of hacking, rather than just present all hackers as misunderstood and misguided? There are those who hack for profit or criminal reasons - I'm not saying all, I just wonder if it will be a balanced view.

Whichever way it goes, it's still going to be a controversial and interesting movie don't you think?

Sounds fantastic but it will take the sheen off if they don't, as you rightly point out, try to offer a balanced view. This isn't really a topic you can romanticise is it?

I don't know...War Games? You could romanticise it, although I don't think in a documentary.

Man, I got so excited there for a second -- I thought it was a new, making-of doc about Hackers. Damn.
