Singer confirms Superman sequel

BryanSinger.jpgBryan Singer has confirmed that he's after a sequel to his hugely successful and quite superb Superman Returns (review) at Comic-Con.

Through Sci Fi Wire he says...

..."I haven't concluded a deal to do it yet, which is always iffy," Singer told a crowd of several hundred fans. "But my intention is to do it. My intention is to do it for 2009. And it would be sort of like, where this one sort of introduced the characters and the universe to some degree, which required some measure of reintroduction, because it had been several years since it had been around, this one, the next one, enables me to get all Wrath of Khan on it,"

Oh yes...now that sounds interesting...just lose the son, keep Spacey, and I think you'll have another hit with ease. Surely Singer can write his own cheques by now? My only concern about this sequel is what is going to happen to Logan's Run?

Well it's now 3 years until the "scheduled" release of the sequel, so could he fit Logan's Run in between now and then? It'd want to move quickly, but I think it could be done.

Singer also said at Comic-Con that we can "expect" an alien villain to battle with Superman. Doomsday anyone?

My main concern is that given Warner Bros have said they will be cutting the budget for a sequel, how will they manage to create epic battles between Superman and the villain of choice? If Superman Returns cost $260m+ (including the 10 years of pre-production, etc) well then how are they going to get more for less?

If they match the budget for this one, I guarantee they will make HUGE profit if there is some great action. Good action = repeat viewings.

Heck, I even went to see Superman Returns again purely for the airplane scene. Imagine if he fought Doomsday?! 8-0

2009?

What I can only think about now is my age at that time, now I can look forward to it for another reason.

I am just glad to hear that a sequel will be made, knowing Singer's capabilities, this will be GREAT! ;D

Ouch... so much time to wait? At least, the franchise is officially opened, that´s good news.

Peter, you beat me to it! I was just about to say I can't possibly wait 3 years to see the sequel - but its so great to have another terrific comic-book franchise to look forward to. May there be many more films to come...maybe they should do the same thing as 'Pirates' or 'Matrix' and film a couple simultaneously - that way we could have a new movie every year or maybe I'm just being greedy ;-)

Interestingly Joel Silver is saying that he will get a new Director if he has to, and with the Superman sequel announcement and word that Singer will do a smaller project before then which isn't Logan's Run, I think he'll do just that.
