Sony releases movies on memory stick
Another bizarre move in the world of movies is the idea of releasing videos on those small memory sticks that are present in loads of devices nowadays, particularly phones, cameras and, in this case, the Playstation Portable.
From Digg through arstechnica.com comes the story:
Beginning next month, Sony will promote "Memory Stick Entertainment Packs" that will pair 1GB or 2GB Memory Sticks to select Sony Pictures movies. Users who purchase such packs will receive a proprietary DVD that contains four Sony Pictures movies. Using a "unlock" code, customers can transfer one of the four movies to their PSP for free. The other three movies will be rendered unviewable. Currently the four movies featured in the promotion are "Hitch," "S.W.A.T," "The Grudge," and "XXX: State of the Union," and they can only be viewed on the PSP.
Personally I don't see why they are choosing such a restricted method of accessing the movies, just getting one film and then the rest are locked out? Does this mean you just throw the DVD away at the end of it? What a daft concept. Why not just buy a memory stick with a movie on it? Even make the memory stick read only? You just know that in a few weeks of release that DVD will be hacked and people will have all the movies off it, memory stick or not...
