Southland Tales saved by Sony
After the worrying story about the possible forced heavy cut of Southland Tales, news comes today that the creator Richard Kelly may not have to destroy it after all. Seems Sony have given him the benefit of the doubt.
In a story from Hollywood Elsewhere through Cinematical comes some promising news:
Kelly and his editor are "re-ordering" some scenes, cutting some others, re-writing and re-recording some voice-over with Justin Timberlake, and then finishing a bunch of visual effecfts shots that weren't done in time for Cannes. The finished cut will clock in around 10 minutes shorter, give or take, and Kelly expects to show it to Sony honchos in a few weeks time.
Originally the Cannes showing was, well, canned, yet IMDB was showing amazingly strong reviews. Sure there's a middle ground here, but that middle ground was not deserving of the story that the film would have to be entirely recut against Kelly's wishes and without him being present.
Luckily Sony have seen this and let him have his way. If anything, at least this is going to be his tale.
