Spielberg talks Indiana Jones
Steven Spielberg has talked about where Indiana Jones 4 is at, and about the previous script by Frank Darabont. He's also mentioned Jurassic Park IV and Lincoln. He also tells us the name of the Black Hole space project he's going to work on.
From Spielberg Films through Coming Soon comes the interview.
Let's kick off with what he has to say on Indiana Jones:
George and I have been promising it for a lot of years now, but I’m making every attempt to keep my promise. I just want to make sure that the fanbase is given the best ‘Indiana Jones’ anybody could possibly make, and until I can assure myself that at least I’m trying to make the best ‘Indiana Jones’ film of all time, the development will continue. The process of developing the script will continue, and it continues right now with David Koepp writing the script.
So what happened to the screenplay by Darabont? Well he says he liked it a lot, it was a wonderful script, but apparently not what he was looking for. When Awalt asked him if it would ever see the light of day, he said very firmly it wouldn't.
Then there's Lincoln, Black Holes...and Jurassic Park...read on...
On the subject of Jurassic Park IV, he has a director earmarked...
Joe Johnston is standing by....I’m a huge fan of Joe’s, and he’s the right guy to do the fourth one.
...and Lincoln?
The script’s being written, and hopefully sometime in September/October of ’07 I’ll have the chance to start that. I can’t guarantee that, it’s just, once again, like ‘Indy 4,’ that script is in process.
On his Black Hole project, he seemed rather more excited than the rest...
It’s called ‘Interstellar.’ That’s the name. It’s a detailed treatment by Dr. Kip Thorne, and I’m working with Lynda Obst, who’s the producer, and Kip Thorne on this project.
So let's take a breath and digest. Indy is obviously on hold until they get a decent enough script, and they haven't, even with Darabont, which I found quite surprising. I am glad of his words though, it sounds like he's really going against the tide and holding on to try and get the best possible, however, he's got to watch his time, no one is getting any younger. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lincoln film came by first and knocked Indy out for a while.
Oh, and on another project, he said that the dailies for Transformers looked fantastic, and that's without any CGI.
What do you think on Indy, should we wait for that perfect script? Should he just pass the project by and not risk the chance of spoiling the series with an aged Ford?
