Zeta-Jones in New York, New York remake?
Catherine Zeta-Jones is in talks to star in a remake of the musical New York, New York, carrying on her on screen singing from her previous outing in Chicago. This time, unlike the Filmstalker story on possible Gypsy musical, the story comes with confirmation from Zeta-Jones herself.
From Sky through Moviehole:
"I have been in talks about a remake of New York, New York and it's one of my all time favourite musicals. I love that forties period, she tells the site. The original film, starring Minnelli and Robert De Niro, told of a smooth-talking musician, and a lounge singer, respectively, who meet on the last day of the war, and unhurriedly fall for each other.
The original was directed by Martin Scorsese and is a classic, is there a sense that this shouldn't be remade and if it was it should follow the original casting of big stars? Interestingly the writer of this also gave us The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!
I've said it before, I think she's okay on screen. Sure she's beautiful but she's not been in any career defining roles. Until Chicago that is. I think she may have found a place she can begin to shine, so if the studios are willing to make musicals then she should be one of the first considerations.
