Blair Witch: The Prequel?

BlairWitch.jpgIn an interview about his new movie Altered, Eduardo Sánchez reveals that hope is not lost on a third Blair Witch film. It would see both he and Daniel Myrick, the original creators and directors of the film, return to the Witch.

Altered is the story of a group of men who had been abducted by aliens when they were younger. Years later they capture an Alien and take it to their cabin for what might be deemed revenge, except things don't play out quite like that.

It does sound an interesting story, and it'll be very interesting to see if these guys have outlived the Blair Witch hype. Yet it seems they haven't outlived the idea of the Blair Witch. In an interview with Fangoria through Moviehole, he says:

"I'd love to do another, especially a prequel about Elly Kedward," he says. "We've given it a lot of thought and there's even a pretty good treatment, but we'll have to wait and see what the people at Lionsgate [which took over Artisan] have to say about it."

Okay so the second was rubbish, and most people think the first was too. I'm in a different camp, I really liked the first, mainly because I managed to drop all the baggage and hype at the door and put myself in the position of watching it in that first screening, as though I was one of those first people who thought it might just be real...and for that I loved it.

The question is could they make it as strong as the original, or would they fall on lazy ground as the second film did?

I also saw the first Blair Witch Project and quite enjoyed it. I guess after all this time the novelty for films such as these would have worn off. I mean their concept at that time was original, and that was why I was interested in seeing it, but by the time the 2nd film came out and failed to capture that, it kinda looks worrying for the 3rd. I say move on from this.

Where is that 'Confessional' thread...'Blair Witch' is another of those I hold my hands up to and admit to having not seen. It's getting added to my rental list, honest!

This movie worked on me a lot, I viewed it alone, some Saturday night, without any expectations, and I was quite frightened, really. It´s really good IMO.

But they should have thought of a prequel much earlier on. The sequels were almost a disaster, and now there won´t be the environment to create that small little phenomenon.

most people think the first was too

Really? I've always been under the impression that the first was generally well-received, even if people were a bit nauseated by the camerawork. Never seen either film, by the way.

I'm in another camp, Richard. The first one scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it and still gives me goose bumps...but if you forget that the first one was a completely different style of movie and forgive it for it's lack of cohesion with source material, the second movie, Book Of Shadows, wasn't all THAT bad when compared to some modern horror fare.

It also had a really good "inescapable" twist at the end, even if you did see it coming.

Having said that, even though I'm one of the only like, ten people who liked number two, I'm cringing...absolutely about to FAINT with fear taht they're even thinking of a prequel.

as with anything, I'll wait and judge after I see it, but man. I just can't see any logic in this. Maybe someone else can?

Maybe, just maybe, they have a new idea for this film that'll hit us as hard as the first?

I'm not so sure though. I think it will tread traditional horror ground.

I think Kurt mentioned confessions in a comment, well here's one, I haven't seen the sequel.

if you want to see it, Richard, take it from me...forget what KIND of film the first was and focus on what it was about. And don't expect it to be a "this is real" film. They take a really interesting approach to it plotwise. And the conclusion really does mess with your mind.

if you do end up checking it out, let me know if the "#$%@ WITCH!!!" line made you laugh. I cracked up.

once you watch it, you will know exactly what i'm talking about. :)
