Daniel Craig talks Bond

DanielCraig.jpgA recent interview with Daniel Craig reveals two very real things about the actor playing the new Bond. One is that we, the Internet people, hurt him by being so negative about his casting, and possibly not just him either. The other is that it made him even more determined to make this new Bond work, and not just new because of the actor.

In the interview he talks about how he was first approached to play the character, and when he asked for the script and was told there wasn't one yet he turned it down immediately. When a script appeared he read it and was very much surprised, he expected to hate it but ended up loving it.

"I think there has to be an element of cruelty," says Craig of his Bond. "Certain things he does should be questionable. I think you should go, 'Fuck, that's not nice.' He is an assassin."...

...We might disappoint some people who want more fantasy," he says, "but I think a lot of people are waiting for this type of Bond."

He also said that after this time he decided to come out all guns blazing and really deliver the best Bond he could, if not better.

Craig goes on to say that he had a few dark days after he found out what was being written about him after the casting announcement. At the time he was in the Bahamas working hard. I guess all the people who were sitting in their sofa's slagging the poor man off didn't think of the guy himself, one of the beauties of the Internet, the distancing of the personal, of the human contact.

You know this whole Internet thing can be pretty damn pathetic and cruel sometimes. However the good thing is that our new Bond kept going and perhaps we'll see the first successful change in direction for the movie character in some time. I know that now, I'm keen to see this harder, darker Bond.

The interview is over at Esquire through CommanderBond.

I always thought that Timthy Dalton made a very good Bond precisely because he was a bit more rugged, a bit less refined than Moore before him. That didn't really work out, though, so they brought in Brosnan, who fell back into the sly smoothie pattern. (Although I was very impressed by the first act of Die Another Day, when Bond gets captured and tortured. Brosnan looked like a total badass when he got out, and I had been hoping that he would keep that up throughout the film...sadly not.)

But to anyone who thinks Craig is not going to be TOTALLY AWESOME, you need to watch Layer Cake. Apart from being one of the best British gangster flicks ever, the whole thing is practially an extended audition for the role of Bond.

I hadn't been excited about Casino Royale until I saw Layer Cake. Now I can hardly wait.

Unfortunately the shortlived example of Dalton makes me fear a bit for Craig's tenure as Bond if he's talking about going for that sort of darker edge to the character. Still, I'll be interested to see exactly what he does...

It's possible, Pig, I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable, vomitous mass, that I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. But, then again... perhaps I have the strength after all. DROP... YOUR... SWORD!
