Dark Materials Golden Compass cast update

NicoleKidman.jpgNicole Kidman has been confirmed to be in final negotiations for the adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, starting with The Golden Compass. She was first rumoured back in late June, and then again in July she was mentioned next to Paul Bettany. Dakota Blue Richards has also been announced to join.

The news is all over the Net, but there's still no actual confirmation just yet, as can be seen from the Filmstalker stories above, we've known about this for some time. Good casting though, and it's looking more and more likely these three are in the leads.

I'm a huge fan of Kidman, so I should probably use this news as an opportunity to read the books before I see the film. Don't really know a lot about them - does anyone here recommend them?

Jayne, I was planning on reading the books AFTER I have seen the film. This is what happened to me in Fellowship of the Ring and then The Chronicles of Narnia. ;D

Yes, that's what I usually do but am tired of being told that this is the wrong way round. "Always read the book before you see the film"...Well at least if I stick to my usual method, I can use a 2-hour movie to decide whether or not to invest a significantly larger chunk of time into reading the book ;-) Maybe if I had tried to read LOTR afterseeing the movies I wouldn't have given up less than a third of the way through...
