Emmys reward big series

24_Poster.jpgNow I know that the Emmys are all about television, but this year there's a huge nod towards the long running series, those programmes that are becoming more and more film like, programmes such as 24, The Sopranos and The West Wing.

The complete results are available in PDF format from the Emmys official site or you can view them individually on the Emmys winners page. The rewards for these series were:

24 - Outstanding drama series, Oustanding lead actor in a drama series - Kiefer Sutherland, Outstanding direction for a drama series
The West Wing - Supporting actor in a drama - Alan Alda
The Sopranos - Outstanding writing for a drama series

I'm surprised that both West Wing and Sopranos didn't win more, especially as West Wing reached it's final series, but 24 was incredibly strong yet again, and I'm amazed that it hasn't faltered. The big question for me was where was Battlestar Galactica? Also Lost is nowhere to be seen, perhaps a sign of the fan base losing interesting as the convaluted plot stretches out too far?

I am a long time Star Trek fan. I have enjoyed all the series but especially TNG. I have only recently begun watching Battlestar Galactica--I am halfway through the first season. I never thought I would say this but already I believe it surpasses Star Trek in nearly every way. It is not just great Sci Fi, it is one of the best television series ever to air. I can't believe it was overlooked at the awards.

I am glad 24 won, because it was a recognition for five thrilling seasons of the most influential series now made. Kudos for Kiefer Sutherland, Jon Cassar, and all the crew involved!!!

i'll be completely honest with you, Richard...and I'm a writer so I feel I know what I'm talking about.
As your plot becomes richer and more thought provoking, you will please your fans more an more, but you will inadvertently lose some of them. Chalk it up to the busy schedule of todays' world or the fact that new shows come on and take away viewership...but I dont think LOST's story is at all too convoluted...

I think it's just that the story has begun to go over people's heads. I have to say the season finalle for season 2 was better than the first...maybe i'm being too defensive, i mean, i'm totally pleased that my favorite show, 24, has won so much here, but I wouldn't take it as an insult that LOST didnt' win anything ( or was even nominated... ) I just say that perhapse they rewarded it just enough last year.

After all, the show isn't exactly covering any new ground. I am, however, surprised it wasn't at least nominated for the "best direction in a drama series" catagory. oh well.

I take your point Mogulus, but I'm really struggling with it and not because of the large arcing storyline - I'm an original Babylon 5 fan for that very fact.

The start of series 2 annoyed me because it was basically the same as series 1 - here's a new bunch of people, here's them discovering the island, etc, etc.

Then there's the episodes where nothing progresses, the distraction episodes. I'm also finding it hard that characters are making such inane decisions that aren't in keeping with their own characters or the situations. For instance everyone being friends with Sawyer after he's tricked them all and stolen all their weapons, at a time when they are under constant threat of attack.
