Halo gains unknown Director

Halo.jpgNot a complete surprise but the announcement for the Director of Halo has been made and it's a first time feature director. Prepare for those instant haters to start hating, the fans to start digging, and the rest of us to take an impartial look at what this really means.

Neill Blomkamp is set to direct. According to Coming Soon he...

...directed the acclaimed 2005 short film, Alive in Joburg, that depicted a future in which extraterrestrials have become refugees. Last year, Blomkamp also received three Clio Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for his television commercial Citroen-Alive with Technology. In 2004, Blomkamp was recognized as "One of the Top Five Directors to Watch" at the First Boards Awards and was a featured artist at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes. He has also been nominated for an Emmy award for his work on an episode of James Cameron's "Dark Angel."

He's also been a 3D Animator on Smallville, First Wave, Stargate SG-1, as well as other series and two movies, one for TV.

So the haters can instantly, and once again proclaim this film a complete disaster and doomed to failure, while the fans can start digging around and find anything that can pin him to the possibility of being a great choice, and I think that hope lies firmly in his advertisement work and in his mastery of technology and animation.

However there's a nice middle ground here. There are many new directors appearing all the time, and they are not instantly rubbish. There are also many big directorial names that have arrived from the world of advertising, none of these factors is an instant sign of anything. However, they are good indicators that he will understand effects, and bring an exciting visually engaging style to the screen. The real test is if he can pull a story together and effectively tell it to the audience with excitement, tension and passion.

So where do you fall? Hater, hoper, or with me on the middle ground?

I have to admit, I'm a hater, Richard. But I'm not going to completely write this movie off until I see it.

I mainly fall into the hater camp simply to watch the reaction from the lover camp. I mean, hey, it's kinda predictable.

I'd be freaked out to no end, man, if this movie went gangbusters at the theatre, this director becomes a house hold name, and at some party in the distant future, everyone whom ever took issue with me looked deep into my eyes and said:

"So what was that you said about Halo sucking?"

I'd really be in a predicament.

I'm quite happy to keep an open mind on this one. Given Bungie's history with the Marathon series, Halo books and committment to the genre, I think they should have a decent sci-fi story. Still...... it is a videogame adaption and that alone gives me a teeny bit of doubt.

File me under "Complete Lack of Interest". There are so many original stories and ideas out there, the adapt a movie from a video game doesn't do much for me. Adapting a movie from a First Person Shooter does even less.

I don't hate the movie, or even want it to fail, I just feel it is a waste of the time and effort of the creative people involved.

I find it very sad that projects like HALO are going forward when something like Orson Scott Card's ENDER'S GAME sits on the shelf.

I fall into the middle ground catagory. I'm not a huge fan of Halo and I'm not psyched about the making of this movie.

I have taken a bit of time to look at some of the stuff this guy has done with commercials and watched his short film. I think he has definite potential. I would honestly like to see him succeed with his first feature film. The fact that it's a video game adaption is a worry.

Forgot to mention that I really did like "Alive In Joburg" It was quite different. No doubt the director has some talent. Why waste it on a Halo movie?

Why is it going to be wasted on Halo?
