Nolan to remake The Prisoner

ThePrisoner.jpgChristopher Nolan is close to an agreement to make a film of classic TV series The Prisoner. Yes that's right, not content with remaking old movies Hollywood is remaking old TV shows as films.

The Prisoner starred Patrick McGoohan as a spy who resigns but is then kidnapped and held in a weird prison. A war of attrition then begins between No 6, as he is then called, and the mysterious people behind the prison. They want to find out why he resigned and he wants to get the hell out.

Variety through Coming Soon reports that Nolan may take on the project after he has completed the next Batman film The Dark Night. What do you think, will a television show transfer well to a feature film, and will the drawn out tension of a television show be comparable once its condensed into one movie?

[Richard's take] I had to add something onto Louise's story here. I've seen the original series and it's really good, I loved the idea and the execution was excellent, the setting, characters and actors all quite quirky and just kept you glued to the show.

Now you know how much I am against remaking material for the sake of a cash cow, but there's something different here, there's the potential for a great remake that could be done with the right people, the right setting and could really benefit from today's styling and effects. Although I'd hate to see it done badly, I do think that it could be done really well and give us something different. Am I wrong? What do you think about it?

I agree with you, if done well The Prisoner might make a great small to big screen transfer. It was one of the most original TV shows ever, so it would depend on weather they manage to keep it quirky and not just go for an action packed man escape movie. Christopher Nolan would be a pretty good guy to do this, though if I could choose I would like to see Jean-Pierre Jeunet in the chair as I think the look and feel he gives his films would be perfect.

It's certainly seems possible to make a good movie from "The Prisoner," but whether Hollywood can do it or not is another question. If they do remake it, it'll probably be an action movie with poorly-developed themes.

But, no matter what Hollywood does with the material, we'll still have the TV show. Its cold-war ideas may not be relevant anymore, but the themes about individuality, organizations controlling people, surveillance, deception, and paranoia are just as relevant as ever. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the ideas from the show.

My favourite TV show ever... I am just watching it these days... and now THIS?

What does Patrick Mcgoohan to say about it? I guess he just will receive the money and leave it.

He is wiser than me.

Agreed. If there was ever a TV Show ahead of its time, it was THE PRISONER. It would be hard to squeeze the detail into a single 2h film though...(A problem with any TV adaptation).

Yeah, I think there's a lot of problems inherent in the idea of turning this into a film, not least what could happen with the Hollywoodisation of the original concept. Still, Nolan could probably pull it off; at the very least I think you could count on him to put some effort into it so that it wouldn't just be a quick, lazy redo...

I'm not usually a big fan of film adaptations of old TV series, but The Prisoner in Christopher Nolan's hands could be something very good indeed.

I wonder how many of you have REALLY seen the series? Patrick McGoohan´s THE PRISONER? I tell you, not Nolan, or anyone, can even try to succeed in making an adaptation of such a personal work without losing entirely the point.

I wonder, also, why Nolan has so much prestige. He is a fine director, but not a demi-god! Since Memento, his movies have been decreasing the quality, slowly, but steadily. Insomnia was right, but not outstanding, and his Batman is not the super brillian movie so many claim to be.

Compared with any Prisoner series chapter, like, let´s say "Hammer into Anvil", that is nothing. And I am not exaggerating. Look into the Net to find about the immense richness of that unrepeatable series.

I am beginning to get curious now about this, I will check if it's available to rent on Amazon and let me watch it, then I can say what I think. :P
