Snyder talks Watchmen
Zack Snyder is completing the superb looking 300 starring Gerard Butler, and is beginning to think (rather forcibly at the hands of the press it seems) about his biggest project, Watchmen. In a recent interview he talks about the scripts and how he's just as unsure as all the other fans.
Q: will you still be using David Hayter's script? Snyder: A lot of it...I think honestly for me, Alex's take and Hayter's take, they're both versions of "Watchmen" but for me, they're not it. No one's cracked it.
Now that news from SuperHero Hype is the best I've heard to date, although Hayter's script was supposed to be very close to the original, it's good news that the lambasted Tse script isn't in his favour. Snyder sounds very keen on the original material, much more than the usual directors fawning over source material we hear.
...whenever I get bummed out about the script or about making it into a movie and what everyone thinks, I just go to the book and open it up, look at it and go, "Okay, this is going to be awesome. Don't freak yourself out." For all the guys who say, "Don't make it into a movie!" and I have to say that some days I wake up and I'm that guy......My [copy of] "Watchmen" is like freaking highlighted and drawn-on and dog-eared and f*cked up.
He does sound as though he likes the work and believes in it, and the news that neither script is hitting the spot for him is also good. He says earlier in the interview that he just won't make it until it feels right. So expect it either to get done right, not at all, or Snyder to leave for someone else to attempt it.
