Black and Ferrell in CHiPs film?

CHiPs.jpgThe talk of the CHiP's film, that's the film based on the TV series about the motorcycle cops - Californian Highway Patrol, has turned quiet. Now it looks like this film might be pipped to the post by a comedy version starring Jack Black and Will Ferrell, much in the vein of Starsky and Hutch.

The word from The Greatest Jack Black Site in the World through Digg:

Jack...Black and Will Ferrell have sold an untitled comedy pitch to New Line Cinema that centers on Los Angeles motorcycle cops, reports Variety...

...Will Ferrell will portray a cop who moves to Los Angeles because there's no crime in Irvine. He partners with Black, who's the youngest in a long line of cops but is unsuited to join the family business.

If they race ahead with this they just might beat the "slightly more serious" version of the film, however I still question the appetite or quality of a film of the TV series. This is pure nostalgia and not really a great piece of drama, just a very popular Saturday afternoon show, and I was a fan too, but it can't make a film, surely? However sounds like the Black-Ferrell film is going to be using the idea as a base and nothing more, perhaps these two comic giants could produce something really exceptional?

As a kid, I remember watching CHiPS on a Saturday afternoon while having lunch. Unfortunately it was more to the fact that CHiPS aired the same time as lunch was made in my house, rather than making sure I was parked in front of the TV every week.

Can you make a movie about CHiPS? I'm sure you can, but it'd be extremely foolish to bank on the die hard CHiPS fans to go to see it. They're going to have to make a film with large appeal. Whether they can or not remains to be seen. But with regards to the Jack Black and Will Ferrell "CHiPS" movie, that one could most certainly work.

I have always liked Jack Black and he has been on a good rise of late, with box office success with School of Rock, Shark Tale, King Kong and Nacho Libre. Will Ferrell is also a big draw at the moment, so with those two names headlining a comedy, I think they could definitely be onto a winner.

"...Will Ferrell will portray a cop who moves to Los Angeles because there's no crime in Irvine."

That line pretty funny. I live in Orange County and my friend and I describe Irvine as the Edwards Scissors Hands neighborhood. It's an incredibly boring and plain city with no real character.

Anyway - I like Ferrell and Black's movie pitch much better than the idea of a CHIPS movie. I loved the show growing up, but I really hope they don't go the failing route of making a popular fun tv show from the past into a full feature length movie.

Oops...sorry about that double post. =/
