Crowe says no to Irwin film

RussellCrowe.jpgYesterday I wrote about the speculation of Russell Crowe asking to play Steve Irwin in a biographical film, and I said then I thought this was dubious:

Crowe talked at Irwin's funeral, and was indeed a friend, but I'm not so sure that he would be this quick in talking about a biographical film and pushing forward with it.

I wasn't surprised to see the news this morning that he's publicly denied it and said the following through Empire:

"There's no truth to that whatsoever," Crowe told Comingsoon.net while doing press for A Good Year. "That's one of those appalling pieces of sh*t that come out of the press. While my friend's body is still warm, I'm being accused of doing commerce over his grave, and it absolutely disgusts me."

Well I think you're being a bit harsh there Crowe, the stories I all read were saying it in a very positive and flattering light, more that you were wanting to pay respect to him and his work by bringing the story of his life and work to the screen, not trying to cash in on it all.

That said, he does go onto speak more about the idea of a movie of his life, and he agrees there really should be. He talks about his ambition to build his parents reptile park into the biggest zoo in Australia, and how he was a strong conservasionist. Actually, that's what I took from the original story, not for a second that he was trying to cash in.

What did you think? Did you think bad of Crowe for yesterday's rumour if it turned out to be true?

I thought it was rather insensitive of them (studio or whoever) and Crowe to even comtemplate such a notion right now. Let the poor widow and children grieve in peace. Maybe in the future when the pain isn't so intense, not just for the family but for fans as well, then dedication to Steve Irvin is well warranted. Steve was quite original. We will all miss him.

Timing sure, I can understand that, but the idea is still a good one and Crowe (his friend) playing him would be an excellent memorial.
