Kubrick was disgusted with Eyes Wide Shut

StanleyKubrick.jpgStanlety Kubrick talked to R. Lee Ermey, who first came to the fore in Full Metal Jacket as the quite insane Gunnery Sergeant, spoke with him shortly after the film was completed, and his comments are quite strong. Not just for the film but also for Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.

"Stanley called me about two weeks before he died, as a matter of fact. We had a long conversation about Eyes Wide Shut. He told me it was a piece of s**t and that he was disgusted with it and that the critics were going to have him for lunch. He said Cruise and Kidman had their way with him - exactly the words he used. He was kind of a shy little timid guy. He wasn't real forceful. That's why he didn't appreciate working with big, high-powered actors. They would have their way with him, he would lose control, and his movie would turn to s**t."

That's his full quote from IMDB. Now before people fly off and say Kidman and Cruise ruined it, read that carefully. It doesn't quite say that and it leaves enough room to suggest that Kubrick thought the film was awful, and on another point the stars easily controlled him, it does sound as though it was a major factor however.

It's indeed a shame that this was his last film, however I think that we should all look to his body of work over this last one, and Emery's comments just cement that fact. You've got to like the guy, he does speak as plain as day.

I am just curious why is this all coming out now? How convenient.

I believe the news, knowing how Kubrick was. But I also believe it doesn´t matter. If you watch Jan Harlan´s "Life in Pictures" you learn that both Cruise and Kidman were delighted to work with Kubrick, and had very warm words towards him. But the documentary also shows a bit of the darker side of Kubrick, so I don´t see any reason why Ermey would be lying. But the most important, these opinions don´t change the fact that Eyes Wide Shut is a masterpiece.

Its a pretty common saying that an artist shouldn't really be the judge of his own work after its finished and released. After that its the audiences property, and whatever feelings the artist has afterwards is not really that relevant.

I just think that the timing in coming out in the open with this news however true or false it is couldnt come at a much better time.

You imply something, Simone. Why you think it´s so convenient?

Just when you think the Cruise bashing is all over, this will further fan the flames.

I don't know what to make of the story, cos 1) I can't imagine Kubrick letting himself be walked over like that and 2) I also can't imagine why Ermey would be lying. Although I will confess to also wondering why it's taken him so long to say so.

You got it there James. I mean he waited 7 years to come out and say it at a time when everybody saying they hate Cruise is equal to being "in"?
