Luhrmann's epic title and plot revealed

BazLuhrmann.jpgBaz Luhrmann has finally talked about his Australian epic and not only revealed the title but also the plot and some of the feelings behind it.

The title is going to be...Australia.

Now as much as there is to be made fun of the way he announced it, the title does tell us that this is really going to be an epic and he's going to tell us what the Australian spirit and country is all about. The plot says as much too, which is revealed at The Age through Coming Soon:

The romantic action-adventure, set in northern Australia prior to World War II, centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier

I'm a bit perplexed at why that last statement is in there. Is this to say that these are the same pilots and places that attacked Pearl Harbour, or is it just a comment to make a connection? Is it that significant over Japanese World War II forces? Apparently so according to Luhrmann, something I didn't realise:

What people tend not to know is that more tonnage of bombs were dropped by the same attack force on Darwin as Pearl Harbor. They bombed Darwin 64 times. We were completely lied to in the south about it.

So this really is going to be an epic Australian tale. Expect wonderful locations, hardships on and off the film, and perhaps a long running time. However, do expect something special.
