McGregor as futuristic masked vigilante

EwanMcGregor.jpgEwan McGregor has signed for an interesting science fiction thriller called Franklyn which will be directed by first time director Gerald McMorrow and filmed in the UK.

The story from Production Weekly has a very inriguing plot, and they have a fair amount of detail around it.

...set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis where there is no separation between church and state. It’s the story of four lost souls, - Esser, Milo, Emillia, and Preest - divided by two parallel worlds, on course for a cataclysmic collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.

Preest is a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City; a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London’s homeless. Milo is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to purity of first love. Emilia is a beautiful art student, her suicidal art projects are becoming increasing more complex and deadly.

Oh you have to love the people who write these up, what a great job they must have and a superb imagination. It sounds a stonkingly good tale though, and it'll be interesting to watch and see who gets signed up alongside McGregor for the film.

People said that he could never shake off the role of Obi Wan when he took it on, but I think he's done really well in doing just that. Of course the films themselves helped because they never really pulled the same intense cultness of the originals, but he's managed to pick some roles that have really separated him from the character and the cult.

So who would you want to see him play in this film? The masked vigilante perhaps?

You are right about this one though, it does sound like a very good story to me! I can see him playing Preest, yes.

I don't see Ewan as just Obi Wan Kenobi, he has done other films in between making the SW prequels and like Harrison Ford who got out of the Han Solo image he may well be able to do that too. He's done theater since (Guys and Dolls) and has agreed to to appear for Equity minimum and a cut of any profits in his current project Scenes of a Sexual Nature where he plays a homosexual, this I'd like to see just out of curiousity.
