Starship Troopers 3 gains RoboCop writer

StarshipTroopers.jpgTalking of RoboCop, the writer of the original and also of the Starship Troopers films, is set to write and direct Starship Troopers 3 which seems like it is set to go straight to DVD.

Edward Neumeier has written the script and is currently in pre-production to direct the film which will see our hero, Johnny Rico now a General, called back into action to fight the bugs in the biggest war to date.

You can call me crazy but this news from Production Weekly has me hooked. Okay the sequel wasn't that great, but I loved Starship Troopers, it's great fun. Now combine that with the man who wrote the film and also co-wrote RoboCop, and give him control over the film, and perhaps we might see these Troopers return to their gung-ho, tongue in cheek glory.

Although it looks set to go direct to DVD, it will be shot in HD and I think that the involvement of Neumeier has great potential, oh and one more thing, Casper Van Dien is apparently in talks to reprise his role. What do you reckon, surely this appeals on some level.

The first one is indeed a film that I like a lot. The satire elements make the film work (the film is a bit underrated, or written off prematurely).

Cheap-quels do nothing for me though. I never bothered renting SST2 and would likely not bother with SST3.

Not even with Neumeier writing? Glad that we do agree on a movie though Triflic!

I really thought the first one ended perfectly. In the Orwellian 'war is peace' vibe, the fact that the war continues indefinitely is appropriate.

I always get a bit nervous when writers step up to do sequels (Blade III for example). Verhoeven was the perfect director for Starship Troopers, and I suspect there will be a bit of 'aping' with Neumeier in the directors chair.

I don't think there is much more to be said, and a StarShip Troopers franchise is most definitely not necessary in my book. The Cheap-quels have the effect of retroactively hurting the original.
