Capcom move closer to Hollywood
Although it's fair to say the quality of films adapted from videogames isn't running high at the moment, it is slowly increasing, and with it comes the movement of the two industries. Videogames and film are moving closer, in both directions.
Within videogames we're seeing more film like footage and storylines, playing a game is becoming more like playing in a story rather than seeing a clip and then shooting everything for ten minutes before another story clip.
Now we're seeing films tied with videogame releases, more and more films adapted from videogames are due, and more and more videogame studios are creating solid links with Hollywood.
Capcom is the latest to do this and has announced, through The Hollywood Reporter and Coming Soon, a new post called Senior VP Licensing, why they didn't have a licensing section already I don't know, but this is primarly to focus on the pulling together of films and videogames.
Germaine Gioia will work with studios to find films that can become videogames and videogame franchises. There will also be work to tie release schedules together to make the most of the marketing.
It all makes sense, but I'm really surprised it's not been done sooner, especially with Capcom. They have the Resident Evil franchise and have film adaptations in progess on some of their other big names such as Street Fighter, Devil May Cry and Onimusha.
We're certainly not going to see any less of these films, but what I hope is that we're going to see Hollywood learning from its mistakes with these adaptations and making them better.
