Dead Rising and Lost Planet videogame adaptations

VideoGame.jpgWe just heard about Capcom and their moving closer to Hollywood, they've announced two more films to their current production slate of Street Fighter, Devil May Cry and Onimusha. The games Lost Planet and Dead Rising are going to make it to their production belt.

Now I can get Lost Planet to a degree, that's a game about humans battling the Akrid creatures of the ice covered planet for the little thermal energy there is around to help them all survive. Meanwhile, under the planet others plot the destruction of all above them. One human above the surface remembers nothing before he was rescued from certain death, and of the few things he can remember, one of them is his father being murdered by one of the creatures. Somewhere in there there's a conspiracy, and a story with a plot, so the news from HorrorMovies.ca that it's being made into a film could work.

Whereas the news from HorrorMovies.ca that Dead Rising is becoming a film is a lot stranger. Dead Rising doesn't really have a plot and relies on various gameplay features to keep the gamer involved. One is the constant wave of zombies, another is the many, many ways you can kill them, another is the free roaming aspect of the game, and the final would be the bizarre missions.

Sounds great for a game, but made into a film and it becomes another zombie film doesn't it? It loses all the gimmicks that are making people play it. So why is it interesting anymore? I don't get how that one can make it into a film.

As great a game as Dead Rising is, isn't it pretty much a rip off of Dawn Of The Dead?!

Yeah, I thought that. It's just going to be another zombie film, and since that genre has been covered well I can't really see it doing that well.

Oy, I hate to be Cynical Charlie here, but I've seen that Dead Rising story on a bunch of websites that have no source other than "source." It's akin to some dude telling his friend who just happens to write for a .ca website, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if they made a Dead Rising movie?" And then his friend is like, "Yeah, maybe if I post a story about it, it'll spread like so much cow manure and they WILL make a Dead Rising movie."

Then the blogs, when it's pointed out that this is mere speculation and there is no hard evidence supporting such a film, roll out the chestnut, "We're blogs, what do you expect from us? Are you too stupid to know what a blog is? It's opinion! We're allowed to make mistakes even though we say we never do, ya' jackass."

Grammar isn't the only thing being murdered by blogs!

[For the record, I don't hold any of this against you, Richard. Happy New Year]

Oooh, the plot thickens. Perhaps it was the mild speculation of one Dan Vinton, contributing writer for CHUD. He was writing a story similar to this one talking about the Capcom games that are in fact in development deals (Street Fighter, Onimusha, etc.) when he said:

Will Capcom's Hollywood push include potential film properties of Dead Rising (time to sue, Mr. Romero!), Lost Planet (pictured above) and Megaman?

It was a throwaway comment in an article based on a Hollywood Reporter story that only mentioned Dead Rising as a franchise for Capcom, not a movie deal. The real sad thing is that this kind of hardcore "investigative journalism" was done with a couple of mouse clicks and a basic comprehension of the language. What a great way to start the year!

Well there's rumour galore out there, and I do hold HorrorMovies higher than many other sites in terms of source, as well as the fact that Capcom are moving towards Hollywood much more and that they are lining up a number of projects.

All that together makes me think it's worth bringing up. Especially since the talking point is that there's not a film in Dead Rising.

All valid points, Richard, that do not change the fact that no one has said a Dead Rising movie is in the works and backed it up with a legitimate source. Rumors do indeed abound on the net, but let's call em that and not "news." Dead Rising is still mere speculation and Capcom has made a bunch of other games as well. I hardly think that just because they made a zombie-killing simulator that automatically qualifies it for the movie-rumor mill, particularly when no one seems to think it's a good idea.

All I was trying to do was debunk the story because it was inaccurate. I was not trying to suppress speculation.

Well my apologies, I merely used a source I do quite trust.

I'll try and make sure I label the posts to show the distinction between speculation and news more.

Again, while I appreciate the apology, I don't think it was absolutely necessary for you to do so to me. You are not the only one who treated that speculation as gospel, and if it looked like I was singling you out, then I should be the one to apologize. It's just that this blog is one of the few I actually feel comfortable commenting on in such a fashion. That should be a testament to how you run it and the tone in which you write. Other, more "successful", sites would have either flamed my sorry ass or deleted my comments entirely. I (and mediamelt) am of the mindset that if you're going to have an open forum, you need to accept the criticism with the praise.

That being said, if you say you are going to make a more concerted effort to distinguish between news and rumor in your actual text, I say kudos, you've actually done more than most bloggers and learned from a (rather harmless) mistake.

Well I will defend myself here and say that I didn't say it was gospel and I was pretty clear where it came from and was sceptical about it in my write up, although to be fair I didn't investigate further from the source. With time constraints I really can't afford to do that much.

Appreciate the comments Dave, and I'll take any cricism positive or negative, as long as it isn't disrespectful.

Yep, I definitely take on board all comments and try to make things better.
