BAFTA nominatees and who will win
The BAFTA nominations for this year have been announced, and there's not a lot of surprises to be had, but a healthy splodge of Scottishness (be it title or talent) and overall strength from British film in there.
Casino Royale is getting a few mentions, as well as Daniel Craig being nominated for Best Actor for commanding such an iconic role. Well done him and may critics consider that a nice correction for them.
Interestingly Flags of Our Fathers isn't getting much attention anywhere, and I think that's because of the hurried release this year. It didn't get a big release here and it seemed to be gone rather quickly - just enough to be eligible perhaps? That's unlike the sister film Letters from Iwo Jima which has been excluded because of the new BAFTA acceptance dates.
You can see the full list in the main story, and I've even highlighted my personal favourites, who would you nod for winning?

Best Film:
Now that's tough. Looking at it I would say The Queen could tip it since the awards are coming from Britain, but I would think if that British vote doesn't grab it then it'll be Last King of Scotland. Note that I see that tomorrow so I'll know then whether to back it up or not!
British Film of the Year:
Well this will be tough to predict, but again the same rule applies for The Queen and I would tip Casino Royale as a surprise possible winner.
Special Achievement for First Film:
Red Road! It's Scottish!
Achievement in Direction:
Ooh, now I would say a toss up between United 93, The Queen and Departed, and in that order too.
Original Screenplay:
I'm thinking Pan's Labyrinth could take this one.
Adapted Screenplay:
Departed, definitely. I think that this film has to be a major contender for this category in all award ceremonies because the original was so strong and they did such a great job of adapting it without falling fowl of the remake trap.
Non English Language Film:
Apocalypto. I have to say without a doubt that's my choice, but they may surprise us and nod to Pan's Labyrinth.
Animated:
Mmm...Flushed Away as Aardman are involved and this would be a nice note to Pixar.
Actor:
As much as I like the idea of giving it to Craig (I mean the award!!) I'd go for DiCaprio personally with Whitaker second, although I think Whitaker will take it for his storming performance. Again, I could go all the way to Whitaker after tomorrow's viewing.
Actress:
Ouch. Difficult. Dench or Mirren I think will be the main two, and I have no idea which way it will go.
Supporting Actor:
McAvoy or Nicholson.
Supporting Actress:
I honestly have no idea. Help me out on this one.
Achievement in Music:
Could this be where Dreamgirls takes one from Britain?
Cinematography:
Children of Men. Although Pan's Labyrinth and United 93 are very strong too.
Editing:
United 93 or Departed I would think, although they could sneak in Casino Royale.
Production Design:
Children of Men or Pan's Labyrinth? Again, help!
Sound:
How do you choose this one? This is another one for you to help out on.
Visual Effects:
Pan's Labyrinth or Pirates of the Caribbean.
Make up & Hair:
How would I know, I have neither. Well maybe a little make up. Devil Wears Prada or The Queen.
Short Animation and Short Film:
No idea for either, I'm passing these over to you too.
Rising Star Award:
Who would you give this to? Personally I think Murphy is too far into Hollywood for this award. Perhaps Naomie Harris or Eva Green?
Now, what would you say?
