Blu-Ray allows adult content

BluRayvsHDDVD.jpgThe Adult Industry may not be turning its back on Blu-Ray as first thought. The previous story Blu-Ray to reject adult industry? seems to reflect the views of one studio, Digital Playground. Vivid Entertainment Group is actually going ahead with both formats.

Now before I continue, I'll say this again as I feel every story that touches on this topic seems to need this qualifier. The adult industry has been responsible for leading the way for some time. They have pushed the film industry time and time again, VHS, DVD content, the Internet model, etc, etc. So it's valid that the mainstream industry looks to the adult industry for the way ahead.

According to DailyTech Steve Hirsh, the founder of Vivid, says that they will be publishing on both formats, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, however they aren't getting as much help from Sony as they are with HD-DVD.

"Sony is not giving any assistance in the authoring or replication of adult content on Blu-ray"...Hirsh added that Sony puts restrictions on all Blu-ray manufacturing facilities that produce Disney titles disallowing them from making adult content.

Sony aren't helping them find authoring and replication facilities, but they've managed that on their own, and now they're set to produce on both formats. It's part of a problem that's not just about Sony though, and Hirsh does make that clear:

"Part of the problem [with Blu-ray] is that it’s a new format...There are very few replicators right now."

He even goes so far as to say that perhaps Blu-Ray has the edge:

"It seems to me that Blu-ray has the momentum right now, due to the release of the PlayStation 3 adding a lot more players to the market"

The Vice Chair of the Blu-Ray Disc Association says that there's nothing against adult content:

"There is not a prohibition against adult content...The BDA is an open organization that welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, including those that represent the full spectrum of genres in the content industry."

So this just makes the battle even more confusing. If the adult industry, who normally take the lead and push the battle one way aren't doing that then who is going to win? If the formats are so closely pitched, as Hirsh suggests in the story, then it is down to players alone, does that give the edge to Blu-Ray with the PS3?
